TL;DR: Read our draft bylaws and submit amendment proposals by 3/16 to be discussed by members at our Bylaws Town Hall on 3/19 at 5 PM in Chen 100. No amendments to submit? No problem! RSVP to the Bylaws Town Hall anyway to learn more about our local structure. Don’t forget to become a member before the completed bylaws are voted in on 3/31.
Membership: An Investment in Our Future
Union power comes from numbers. The more members we have, the stronger our bargaining position—and the results speak for themselves:
📉 2018 (30% Membership) → The University of California negotiated just 3% raises for workers.
📈 2022 (70% Membership) → With a supermajority of union membership, graduate workers won 25–80% raises across the unit.
Becoming a union member isn’t just about today—it’s an investment in better wages, benefits, and protections for the future. Every strong contract we win builds on the last, setting a foundation for future workers. A strong union means better conditions for everyone—now and for years to come.
Upcoming Bylaws Ratification Vote – Monday March 31st
The bylaws ratification vote will take place online next Monday. Only union members are eligible to participate, so if you haven’t signed up yet, now is the time!
Contract Enforcement Begins – Tuesday April 1st
Starting next Tuesday we begin contract enforcement, ensuring the university upholds our contract. This is a major step toward protecting our rights and holding the administration accountable.
International Scholars: Know Your Rights Under Trump
Under the Trump administration international scholars face escalating threats to our immigration status and our right to work and organize. On Wednesday, March 26th at 12:00pm PT, UAW members will be holding a Know Your Rights training on international scholars’ legal and contractual rights and how academic workers can work together to enforce and expand these rights through our union. Sign up here to attend online, or join in person in Chen 240a.
Bylaws Town Hall Recap
Thank you to everyone who attended our recent Bylaws Town Hall! Two key amendments were passed:
✅ Amendment 1: The Executive Board will now meet every two weeks instead of once a week.
✅ Amendment 2: Article numbers will be included on all bylaws articles for clarity.
Additionally, to make the bylaws more accessible, short summaries of each article will be included on the 2478 website after ratification.
If you have any questions or if you suspect a contract violation, please don’t hesitate to reach out to organize@cgpu.org
In solidarity,
