Have a problem?

How do academic workers defend and expand the rights we won during contract bargaining? In many cases, we do it through the grievance process.

As unionized workers, we have the right to deal with our employer as equals. This means that, if we have a problem or our rights are violated, there is a formal process in place to get the issue addressed, with concrete timelines, interim measures, and support at every step. This is the grievance process, which can include anything from informal meetings with department administration to formal meetings with the University’s Labour Relations department. Common reasons for grievances include visa renewal issues, abusive conduct, or health and safety concerns, but anything that affects your working conditions can be handled through this process.  No other process for resolving disputes gives workers more agency.

If you think you may have suffered a violation of your rights, find a steward to help you navigate your options around the contract and grievance process. You can also fill out this form and someone will reach out to you.
