TL;DR: Our monthly membership meeting for the month of July will be held next Thursday, 07/31, in Chen 130 at 5:30pm! We will be talking about the outcome of the recent town hall with Reps. Judy Chu and George Whitesides and discussing and approving the quarterly budget proposal! Be there, grab some snacks and beverages, and chat with your colleagues!
Hi there local 2478 members. With another month comes another membership meeting, and this one is important!
The big ticket item for this month’s membership meeting is a review of the recent town hall with Reps. Chu and Whitesides! This event was a massive success, with 280+ attendees showing up to fill Ramo Auditorium to the rafters. Many scientists from both JPL and Caltech showed up, supported their peers who shared stories, and hung back after the program to chat one-on-one with the representatives. We’ll review photos and listen to soundbites from the event. We’ll also talk about how we can build on the momentum of the town hall and make our next ask even more powerful. If you want to keep up the push to save our funding, make sure to join to map out our next steps and learn what each one of us can do!
As stated in our bylaws, the membership is the final say: next, we will review and approve our local budget, as presented and detailed by executive board member Kyle Nelli, our financial secretary. These budget reviews will happen quarterly, and will govern how our local union uses its funding.
As always, remember that the strength of our union–in terms of organizing power and budget–comes from our membership, which is you and your peers. Bring your friends out, and remind them to sign a membership card! As our membership continues to grow, the next time we talk to Rep. Chu, we’ll have more voices, which means we’ll have more power. Whether it’s Caltech admin or the federal government, the weight of our voice is heavier when more people join the chorus–so bring friends and grow membership!
We will be providing snacks and beverages. Please come by, pitch in on the proceedings, hear about our town hall, and get involved!
